Short Overview of Well-Established RFID Card Technologies

Deploying current applications, i.e. access control or attendance recording, is usually in the focus of the customer. Often, the card is just a means to an end, being chosen for the current application without considering possible system expansions. When introducing time attendance recording, it is thus quite common to use an ordinary em4102 chip which only transmits one fixed and constant random number to the reader. This might be enough for time attendance recording, but what if access control is to be installed additionally at a later date? This is what makes the procedure critical. The random number of the card could be read out unauthorized and reproduced without the user or system operator noticing it. Today’s large variety of RFID technologies offers the right level of security for every demand; almost anything - ranging from a UID transmitter (i.e. em4102) to a high security smart card with advanced security features like AES, 3DES and other encoding procedures – is possible today.
